As coordinator of the 92nd Street Y's literary outreach program, part of the Y's Unterberg Poetry Center, Wendy Salinger's goal is to make high school students part of the city's literary community. She does this by arranging for public high school students from the five New York City boroughs to meet with award-winning poets, novelists and memoirists before attending literary readings by those authors presented by the Y's famous Unterberg Poetry Center. The meetings with authors enable the students to learn first-hand about the writing process and the life of the writer, while the attention and respect of established authors encourages the students to think of themselves as writers. During the week before each of these sessions, Ms. Salinger visits the schools to introduce students to the work of the writer they will meet. Other responsibilities include teaching the Y's free weekly writing workshop for high school students and managing the Y's Ernst Pawel Student Writing Award. Ms. Salinger is an accomplished author whose fiction and poetry have been published in The Kenyon Review, The Paris Review, The New Yorker, Ploughshares and other publications. She is the author of a collection of poems called Folly River and the editor of a collection of essays called Richard Wilbur's Creation, and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Poetry Series award for her poetry. Before coming to the Y in 1987, Ms. Salinger was a lecturer in English at Columbia University's School of General Studies, a visiting professor at Sarah Lawrence College, and the artist-in-residence at the Teachers & Writers Collaborative in New York. She has a M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Iowa and a B.A. in English from Duke University. |
