Welcome to the sixth issue of Podium from the 92nd Street Y Unterberg Poetry Center.
We hope you enjoy the twelve amazing pieces selected from the writing program's fiction, poetry, nonfiction, playwriting, literary seminar and advanced level creative writing workshops taught by well-known authors and poets who come to the Y to teach and mentor these writers.
In this issue, the featured photographer is Matthew Zdano, who hails from the South side of Chicago. "To me, a successful image is when you see it in your brain and you can use the camera to translate it into something tangible."

| About the Instructors |
|
| Joyce Johnson's Minor Characters received a National Book Critics Circle Award. Her other books include In the Night Café and Missing Men. She has taught in the MFA programs at Columbia University and, more recently, the New School. She is working on a biography of Jack Kerouac. |
|
| Nalini Jones' story collection is What You Call Winter. She has taught at Columbia and Fairfield universities. |
|
| Han Ong is the youngest playwright to be awarded a MacArthur
Fellowship. His plays include Watcher, The L.A. Plays and Swoony Planet. He is also the author of the novels Fixer Chao and The Disinherited. |
|
| Fiona Maazel's novel is Last Last Chance. She is a former managing editor of The Paris Review and a recipient of a 2005 Lannan Foundation Fellowship. Her work has appeared in Bomb, Salon, Tin House and The Yale Review. |
|
| Glyn Maxwell's books of poems include The Breakage, The Boys at Twilight, Time's Fool, The Nerve, The Sugar Mile and Hide Now.
A winner of the E. M. Forster Prize, he has taught at Amherst College and New York University. |
|
| Daphne Merkin's work appears regularly in such publications as The New York Times Book Review and The New York Times Magazine. She is the author of the novel Enchantment and the essay collection Dreaming of Hitler. |
|
| Katherine Mosby's novels include Private Altars; The Season of Lillian Dawes, a New York Times Notable Book; and Twilight. Her poetry collection is titled The Book of Uncommon Prayer. |
|
| Marie Ponsot's books include The Bird Catcher and Springing: New and Selected Poems. Recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Shaughnessy Medal from the MLA, and the Frost Medal, she teaches at the New School and Queens College. |
|
| Brenda Shaughnessy is the author of Interior with Sudden Joy and Human Dark with Sugar, winner of the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. She is the poetry editor of Tin House magazine and Tin House Books, and teaches at Princeton University and Eugene Lang College. |
|
| Stephen Wright's novels include M31: A Family Romance, Meditations in Green and The Amalgamation Polka.
|
|
| David Yezzi is the author of the poetry collections The Hidden
Model and Azores, and is the executive editor of The New Criterion. He has taught at the West Chester University Poetry Conference and at Stanford University. He was the director of the Unterberg Poetry Center from 2001-2005. |

| As a South side Chicagoan, Geographer, and Photographer who has the pleasure of traveling the world for work with my trusty camera, I have taken a myriad of photos over the past 11 years across three continents. My eye is drawn to geometry, people, color, and reflections in my attempt to communicate images the naked eye cannot see itself and provide a unique angle on the familiar.
