| New York, NY, September, 17, 2007When Robert Altman died last November, movie-goers, critics and fellow filmmakers mourned the loss of one of the most independent and distinctive directors in American film. In an industry saturated with formulaic movies and retreads of old ideas, Altman and his work stand alone. On Sunday, September 23, almost a year after his death, the 92nd Street Y welcomes two esteemed actor/writer/directors, Tim Robbins and Bob Balaban to salute Altman and his enormous impact on American and international film, in general, and their own work, the 92nd Street Y, in particular. Moderator Eddy Friedfeld uses extensive clips from Altman movies, as well as from films Robbins and Balaban have worked on, to introduce different aspects of Altman's movies: his masterful handling of the complexities of ensemble acting, his distinctive comedy style, and his deft integration of political ideas with the artistic needs of a movie. |

Tim Robbins appeared in Altman's The Player, Short Cuts, and Prêt-à-Porter. Known primarily for his acting, Robbins has directed several films, including Dead Man Walking, Cradle Will Rock and the Altman-esque Bob Roberts. Bob Balaban, together with Altman, was responsible for the idea for Gosford Park and was one of the movie's producers. Balaban has acted in a number of films (Capote, A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Ghost World) and is increasingly involved in directing and producing. Eddy Friedfeld is a film historian, entertainment writer and the co-author, with Sid Caesar, of Caesar's Hours: My Life in Comedy with Love and Laughter. |
