Student Housing in New York - Frequently Asked Questions
Take an online tour of the de Hirsch Residence—the New York City residence of choice for students, young professionals, professional interns and international visitors.


1. Does the Residence supply utensils, pots and pans?
Residents must bring their own cooking and eating supplies. There is a kitchen on each floor with all appliances, including a microwave.

2. When and how often is housekeeping done? Should I be present?
Housekeeping is done once a week and linens are changed. What day of the week this service is provided depends on the floor you are assigned. The housekeeping schedule is posted on that floor. You need not be present.

3. Are towels and bed linen supplied?
Bed linen, a pillow, blanket and bedspread are supplied. Towels are not supplied.

4. Is there a shower or sink in the rooms?
No, every floor has a large communal bathroom, with several showers, sinks and toilets.

5. How are the rooms furnished?
Rooms are equipped with one standard twin-size bed, a desk and chair, a dresser and a closet. Double rooms have two of each, except for small doubles, which only have one closet.

6. Is there 24-hour security?
Yes. Security is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at extension 5592.

7. Is there a curfew?
No. Residents are free to come and go as they please, however residents must always carry their Residence identification card and show it to the Security Guard.

8. Can my child and/or young sibling stay as a guest in the Residence?
No one under the age of 18 years old is allowed to stay in the residence.

9. Is there a phone in the room?
All rooms are equipped with one (1) phone jack. Residents wanting a phone must contact the area phone company, after arrival.

10. Can I smoke in my room?
The 92nd Street Y is a Smoke-Free facility. Smoking is prohibited in all areas of the building, including Residence rooms.

11. What is the overnight guest policy?
A guest (can be the opposite sex) may stay in the resident's room a maximum of 3 nights within a 7-day period (or 4 nights if Saturday is included). The resident must fill out a Guest Pass Request Form and pay $15/night for which they will receive a guest pass. (Note: Residents in a shared room must have written permission from the roommate at the time the request is given to have an overnight guest.)

12. Are there fax and Internet facilities that residents can use at the Y?
We do not have fax facilities for residents. However, there are shops in the neighborhood that provide fax services. The Y's Buttenwieser Library has computers with free internet access for time slots of a maximum of 20 minutes (Please note that the Library is closed Saturdays and Sundays in July and closed August through early September.) After checking in, residents can set up Internet service in their room after they have set up phone service through the local phone company.

13. Do you have parking facilities?
The Residence does not have parking facilities, but there are several parking facilities in the neighborhood.

14. Are the gym facilities included in my rent?
The Y's May Center for Health, Fitness & Sport facilities are not included in your rent. However, residents receive a substantial discount on the rates: $109 for 1 month, $179 for 2 months and $379 for 6 months.

15. Are there laundry facilities within the Residence?
Yes. Laundry rooms are available on most floors and are equipped with one washer and one dryer.

16. What are the dimensions of a single/double room?
Single: approx. 9' x 11' (2.75 x 3.35 meters)
Double: approx. 10' x 17' (3 x 5.15 meters)

17. Can I have cable service in my room?
All rooms are wired by Time Warner Cable. Residents requiring cable service must contact Time Warner once they have checked in to set up an account. There is a TV Lounge with a wide-screen TV that residents can use most evenings during the week from 6:30pm, and all day most Saturdays and Sundays.

18. Do you offer Wi-Fi (wireless internet)?
Wireless internet is offered as a courtesy and we cannot guarantee that it will work all the time. If you must have connectivity 100% of the time, we suggest you invest in a personal account through our local cable company.

19. Are there many food shops/restaurants in the area?
There's a supermarket across the street from the Residence. The Upper East Side of Manhattan has a large variety of restaurants and fast-food eateries and many of them will deliver to the residence.

20. Are bicycles allowed in the Residence?
Yes, but you cannot keep it in your room. A bicycle rack is located on the 4th floor terrace of the 91st Street building.

21. Are rooms air-conditioned?
All rooms are air-conditioned.

22. Is transportation easily accessible in the Y's area?
The train stations are four short blocks north or six short blocks south from here. There is a bus stop right across the street from the Y. Taxis can be hailed right outside our doors. Maps are available in our office.

23. Does the Residence have a common area for residents to hang out?
Room 102 is available to residents after 7pm on weekdays and all day on most weekends.

24. Are there social activities for the residents?
The Residence offers "Movie Night" every Monday, where the latest Blockbuster movie is shown and snacks and soda are served. The Y itself offers many classes and lectures at a discount—see the 92nd Street Y's catalog located in the lobby, or browse our website and blog.

25. What will be my mailing address when I live at the de Hirsch Residence?

26. What time is check-in?
We ask that residents arrive at 12 noon or later, unless you have been given permission from our office to arrive earlier. Please get the name of the staff member who gave permission.
