92nd STREET Y ANNOUNCES
SHAWN GREEN BASEBALL CAMP FOR SUMMER 2007
New Specialty Camp in Filmmaking Also Offered This Summer
New York, NY, March, 8, 2007—The 92nd Street Y announces the creation of the Shawn Green Baseball Camp, a one-week intensive day camp to launch this summer. The Y also launches a Filmmaking Camp in conjunction with New York's renowned School of Visual Arts (SVA). These camps join the Y's other specialty camps — in art, science and gymnastics — bringing the total number of such programs to five and the total number of 92nd Street Y summer camps to 14.

The 92nd Street Y Shawn Green Baseball Camp is an intensive one-week camp for children ages 8-11, highlighted by a special visit from New York Mets outfielder Shawn Green, who will offer campers some major-league tips on baseball techniques and strategies. "I'm very excited to partner with the 92nd Street Y," says Green, and "I'm looking forward to working more with kids in the New York community." From Monday, July 23 - Friday, July 27, children spend most of each day focusing on individual baseball skills like pitching, batting and fielding. Campers play baseball games on the Y's five baseball fields, two of which have been newly equipped with dugout areas for players, electronic scoreboards, and professional-style pitchers' mounds and base paths.

In addition to the new baseball camp, the 92nd Street Y also announces a new Filmmaking Camp for children ages 9-11, in partnership with the School of Visual Arts (SVA), an established leader and innovator in the education of artists. SVA's Film, Video and Animation Department is well known for training first-rate cinematographers, directors and animators in an environment that nurtures creativity and enables students to develop a strong sense of identity as well as top-notch skills. SVA students will serve as instructors at the two-week camp, which runs from July 30 to August 10. Campers learn basic filmmaking skills during the first week, and then create their own short films during the second week, with an emphasis on creativity and self-expression. Children work with mini-DV digital video cameras and Final Cut Express computer editing equipment. The camp culminates in a screening of the campers' films.

ABOUT 92nd STREET Y SUMMER CAMPS

These camps join the 92nd Street Y's other specialty day-camp offerings in arts, science, and gymnastics. The Y's general-interest, coeducational day camps in Rockland County feature a huge range of activities for children entering grades K-6; there are also two separate camps for children with special needs, ages 5-13. The Y's teen camp features a mix of day trips, overnight trips and activities at the Rockland County campgrounds, and short-term sleep-away camps are available for children entering grades 2 through 6. The Y's youngest campers (3-5 yrs) attend Camp K'Ton Ton (Hebrew for little ones), which operates in the Y's Manhattan Nursery School facility.

ABOUT THE 92nd STREET Y'S PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

From classes for parents-to-be to extensive activities for teens, the 92nd Street Y provides a supportive, noncompetitive environment that allows children and parents to reach their full potential. The groundbreaking Parenting Center, created in 1978 to help new and expectant parents navigate their new roles, has evolved to reflect the needs of today's working mothers, stay-at-home fathers, grandparents and other "non-traditional" caregivers. The Special Needs Program, created in 1983, recognizes the unique needs of this population, while the new Teen Program gives young people a place to share and learn. Established in 1954, the Camp Program offers 12 programs that range from traditional camps to specialty offerings to programs developed for teens; every summer 1,500 children ages 3 to 15 enjoy these programs in the bucolic setting of the Y's Rockland County campgrounds just outside New York City. Finally, throughout the year, activities for children of all ages introduce them to the excitement of science, the inspiration of the arts, and the fun of exercise. To make sure that children and adults of all are able to participate in these programs regardless of economic circumstance, the 92nd Street Y provides nearly $1 million in financial assistance each year.
