Mirabai Holland is a fitness expert and public health activist who works with every age group of the 92nd Street Y community. Since joining the Y in 1994, she has designed fitness programs for populations traditionally underserved by health clubs: children, teens, women, new exercisers, baby boomers and seniors. She created Women's Heart Plus™, a cardiac rehabilitation program designed for women; Skeletal Fitness™, a osteoporosis prevention workout; Pumping the Prime™, a strength-training program for people in mid-life; and Moving Free™, a mind-body workout that combines aerobics, stretching and meditation. For the last two years, she has organized Mind, Body & Medicine, and a daylong symposium that brings experts in complementary medicine to the Y. In addition to supervising the fitness staff and programming health lectures and classes, Ms. Holland teaches eight classes a week. She is also the creator of two popular fitness videos, "Fabulous Forever" and "Skeletal Fitness," which Prevention Magazine called the "best workout for bones," and is the author of two children's fitness guides titled All Winners: Cooperative Fitness Play For Kids. An active contributor to the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation, the Women and Health Society and the Northern Menopause Society, Ms. Holland lectures frequently on fitness and wellness and is co-founder of the East Coast Alliance Fitness Organization. She has served as the chairperson of the American Council On Exercise (ACE) Exercise Instructor Examination Committee, is certified as a medical exercise specialist by the American Academy of Health and Fitness Professionals and holds certifications from the American College of Sports and Medicine, the Aquatic Exercise Association and the American Council on Exercise. Before coming to the 92nd Street Y, Ms. Holland ran her own health and fitness consulting firm, Mirabai Holland International, through which she advised corporations, health clubs, hospitals and university programs all over the world on how to create innovative fitness programs. She has also worked as exercise program director at New York's Atrium Club and the Athletic and Swim Club at Equitable Center. In 1984, New York magazine named her the "best exercise class teacher in New York City." She has a M.F.A. in dance from New York University, and a B.A. in education from the University of Denver. Mirabai Holland lives in New Jersey with her husband.
