Literary Programs

Since 1939, the Unterberg Poetry Center has offered students of all ages the opportunity to hone their skills as writers and deepen their appreciation as readers. Introductory classes show readers the way into writing. Advanced workshops offer MFA-caliber instruction without requiring a full-time commitment. Master classes give our students the opportunity to work with selected writers who are visiting New York to read at the Poetry Center. And the "Discovery"/Boston Review Poetry Contest, now in its fifth decade, is designed to attract large audiences to poets who have not yet published a book.

Writing Program
The Unterberg Poetry Center's Writing Program offers a wide range of courses, including literary seminars and lectures, introductory writing classes and workshops and tutorials designed to give advanced writers the opportunity to work with practicing authors who are also experienced teachers. Instructors over the years have included Louise Bogan, Arthur Miller, Susan Minot and Paul Muldoon. Workshop size is strictly limited and, unless otherwise indicated, instructors select participants based on their manuscript submissions.
Registration
For introductory classes enrollment is open and students may register online at www.92Y.org/poetry, by phone at 212.415.5500 or in person at the 92nd Street Y's box office.

For advanced writing workshops in poetry, fiction and nonfiction, registration is by permission only. Students are chosen by the instructors on the basis of a manuscript submission. Please follow these guidelines:
  • The manuscript submission should consist of no more than six pages of poetry or 15 pages of fiction (typed, double-spaced) and should be accompanied by a cover letter (stapled to the manuscript; please do not use paper clips) that includes your name, address, daytime and evening telephone numbers, email address and the name of the course instructor.

  • An application fee of $10 must accompany your submission(s). Only one fee is required per person, regardless of how many applications you submit. Please make checks (drawn on U.S. banks only) or money orders (in U.S. currency only) payable to the 92nd Street Y, and attach them to your cover letter. Do not send cash.

  • Manuscript submissions must arrive at the Poetry Center by the deadlines below to be considered for admission:
    Spring: Thu, Jan 7, 5pm
  • Because class space is limited and admission is not guaranteed, you may apply for more than one workshop. Please submit a separate manuscript and cover letter for each course.

  • Please do not send bound books or your only copy of a manuscript. Do not send a return envelope, a registration form or any payment with the submission; registration and payment will be arranged when you are accepted. Manuscripts should not be submitted via fax or email. Manuscripts will not be returned.

  • Applicants who have been accepted into a workshop will be notified by telephone; all others will be notified by mail or email. Once accepted, students should register promptly.
Schedule changes do occasionally occur. For updates, check the Writing Program page here.
