| New York, NY, June, 11, 2003Dizzy Gillespie looks wise, smiling and leaning over a pool table in his New Jersey home. A beaming Cab Calloway in his backyard holds a vintage poster of a much younger but also beaming... Cab Calloway. Clint Eastwood plays piano in a jazz jam in Carnegie Hall. Dick Hyman warms up with a copy of The New York Times on the piano where the sheet music should be. |

These are some of the images on display in JAZZ PHOTOGRAPHS BY HANK O'NEAL at the 92nd Street Y from July 22-31, as part of the annual Jazz in July festival. O'Neal's two passions — jazz and photography — come together in this exhibit in the 92nd Street Y Milton J. Weill Art Gallery, adjacent to the concert hall where jazz reigns for two weeks every July.
The exhibit of Hank O'Neal's JAZZ PHOTOGRAPHS at the 92nd Street Y features photos from O'Neal's collection that have never been shown before, including the first showing of selections from O'Neal's "Piano Hands in Action," a 30-year project that has produced close-up portraits of (mostly) weathered hands playing jazz piano. The 72 photographs in "Piano Hands" include shots of Steve Allen, Dave Brubeck, Hank Jones, Marian McPartland and Gerry Mulligan, among others. The exhibit at the Y also features images from O'Neal's book Ghosts of Harlem as well as a collection of CD booklet covers from O'Neal's label, Chiaroscuro records. The CD booklets document the wide variety of artists who have recorded with the label and often feature O'Neal's photographs.

O'Neal's photo exhibit is part of Jazz in July at the 92nd Street Y, an annual summer festival of traditional jazz directed by Dick Hyman. This year, the festival brings nearly 60 musicians together for six concerts over two weeks, with music that ranges from Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Goodman and Harlem stride piano to recent jazz compositions from Hyman, trumpeter Randy Sandke and others. A number of Jazz in July performers — past and present — are among those depicted in O'Neal's photographs. Dick Hyman, Derek Smith, Kenny Davern, Bucky Pizzarelli and Joe Wilder all appear on stage at the Y this year. Many others whose music has been a staple of Jazz in July in years past will also grace the Y's gallery walls, from past performers like Ralph Sutton, Carrie Smith, George Shearing and Bill Charlap to those whose musical contributions have been commemorated at the festival, like Gerry Mulligan, Milt Hinton and Joe Venuti.
Hank O'Neal's JAZZ PHOTOGRAPHS at the 92nd Street Y runs concurrently with Jazz in July, from July 22-31. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm; for additional gallery hours, call 212-415-5500. The exhibit was curated by jazz aficionado and collector Stanley Blum. All of the photographs in the exhibit are for sale; O'Neal will donate the proceeds of all sales to the 92nd Street Y to help develop a new and younger audience for mainstream jazz.
Members of the press interested in attending the private opening reception with the photographer on Tuesday, July 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the 92nd Street Y Milton J. Weill Art Gallery should contact Beverly Greenfield at 212-415-5452 or email . |
