Israel-Related Holidays

Several observances have been added to the Jewish calendar to commemorate and celebrate various events of significance relating to the Holocaust and the modern State of Israel. These observances all take place between the major festivals of Passover and Shavuot. These days, listed below, are inextricably linked and work to enhance the meaning of one another.
Yom HaShoah

Also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, on this day we remember the atrocities of the Holocaust and honor both those who gave their lives and those who risked their lives to save others. Shoah is the Hebrew word for the Holocaust.
Yom HaZikaron

Also known as Memorial Day, on this day we honor those who fought and gave their lives during Israel's War of Independence in 1948, and the numerous wars Israel has fought since that time.
Yom Ha'Atzmaut

Israeli Independence Day marks the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and Jewish sovereignty in the land of our heritage.
Yom Yerushalayim

Yom Yerushalayim commemorates the reunification of the city of Jerusalem in Israeli hands. On June 7, 1967, during the Six Day War, Israeli troops crashed through the defenses set up by Arab troops and recaptured parts of the holy city of Jerusalem, which had previously been in Arab possession.
