| "What in the world would we have done without 60+ at the Y?" |
| Zeke Alpern, an outgoing 81-year-old former sales manager and lifelong New Yorker insists that the game of bridge is what's keeping him alive. Through the 60+ Program at the Y, Zeke plays every day. It's the concentration, the community of the game, and the routine that he attributes to his sense of happiness and calm. "Before, I was bored out of my mind," he says. "The people I play with, we look around and say to each other, 'What in the world would we have done without the Y?'" |
| In 2007, the Y continued to expand scholarship support to marginalized seniors who wanted to participate in the 60+ Program, with $15,000 in scholarship dollars going to approximately 45 low-income seniors who were able to join with other program participants in educational, cultural, and community-building activities. Attendance records speak to the program's success—approximately 200-250 individuals attend program activities every day, and the average participant remains an active member for ten years. |
