| The Poetry Center Schools Project introduces literary giants to young thinkers. |
 |
| Last March, New York City public high school students taking part in the 92nd Street Y's Poetry Center Schools Project dined with Salman Rushdie. A student boldly asked: "What did you do when you heard the government said you had to die?" Rushdie explained that he went through every room of the house, pulling down the shades. He added that he could not write about the death warrant until many months later. The students and author then talked about the difficulties of writing about emotional personal experiences. |

| Donor support for the Poetry Center Schools Project allows the 92nd Street Y to bring the resources of the Unterberg Poetry Center to 1,500 students from 15 New York City high schools each year. Readings by acclaimed authors animate the written word while classroom trainings and Y workshops provide a forum for students to transform their own thoughts into words on a page. |
