| Scholarships at 92nd Street Y Summer Camps |
| My son M. went into Camp Bari Tov non-verbal, unfocused, leaning towards wild child. After one summer, he was interested in words, sports and nature. Now he waits patiently for camp to roll around again. He blossomed at Camp Bari Tov, started as a shy child... now we have a certificate which states: 'Social Butterfly.' |
| Every summer, approximately 1,500 children ages 3 to 14 participate in the 92nd Street Y's twelve summer camps. Campers enjoy art and nature, learn to swim, play active outdoor games and sports, sing camp songs, and make new friends. Except for the very youngest children, day campers travel by bus to the 92nd Street Y's Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds in Pearl River, NY; included in the Y's day camps are Camp Tova and Camp Bari Tov, where children with special needs grow their social, intellectual and physical skills. |
| The Y works hard to keep its fees for all camps lower than many competing day camp programs, and beyond that, makes participation possible not only for families who can afford camp, but also for the many families who cannot—due to illness, unemployment, the financial strains of single parenting, or simply the cost of raising a family in New York City on a middle-class income. Over the past three years, the Y has awarded an average of 290 scholarships totaling $464,032 to campers in Y programs each year. During summer 2007, $77,550 of those scholarship funds supported 34 campers with developmental disabilities at Camps Bari Tov and Tova. |
