Celebrate the Fall and Winter Holidays at the 92nd Street Y
New York, NY, August, 20, 2007—It's never too early to celebrate! This holiday season, join the 92nd Street Y for fun-filled festivities for the whole family, including concerts, cooking demonstrations, and craft-making. Wed,

Wed, Nov 14, 7 pm, $45
ALL HOLIDAYS / FORTIFIED WINES FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The plummeting temperatures and upcoming holiday entertaining season make this the perfect time to discover hearty fortified wines (wine to which additional alcohol has been added). These wines tend to be particularly sweet because the supplemental alcohol leaves residual sugar if added before fermentation finishes. Sample Spanish Sherries from dry to sweet, several styles of port and even some rare vintage Madeira.

Thu, Nov 15, 7 pm, $35
THANKSGIVING / COOKING WITH MIKE COLAMECO AT THE VIKING SHOWROOM: THANKSGIVING SIDE DISHES
Spice up your Thanksgiving dinner as you join cooking show host and chef MIKE COLAMECO at the Viking showroom for a holiday cooking demonstration, presented exclusively by the 92nd Street Y. Colameco, a restaurant owner and a former executive chef at the Ritz-Carlton in New York, demystifies the world of home cooking, just as he does on his daily show on WOR-AM and his weekly series on WNET-TV/Channel 13.

Nov 29, 1-2 pm, $30
HANUKKAH / MAKE-A-MENORAH WORKSHOP

There's nothing like the candles of Hanukkah to brighten up a child's face — even better if they are in a hand-made menorah! This workshop is specially designed for little hands (with a little help from their grown-ups). Using wood, metal nuts, glue and paper, each child creates an actual menorah that the whole family can enjoy during the Festival of Lights. All materials provided.

Dec 4-11, 4pm, FREE
HANUKKAH / NIGHTLY MENORAH LIGHTING FOR ALL AGES
Join us for our annual lighting of the Hanukkah menorah in the main lobby of the 92nd Street Y. Bring your dancing shoes and singing voice and celebrate with delicious Hanukkah snacks.

HANUKKAH / 92ND STREET Y FAMILY HANUKKAH FESTIVAL
Crafts, Storytelling, Fun and Music

Parents and children experience the joy of Hanukkah at the annual 92nd Street Y Hanukkah Festival. Activities include craft workshops where children can make menorahs and beautiful Hanukkah decorations, and sing-a-longs, games, as well as face-painting, and entertainment by musicians, jugglers and clowns. By using a real olive press, kids can learn how the Jews who lived during the time of the Maccabees made the oil that miraculously burned for eight days — and everyone can enjoy traditional Hanukkah treats like potato latkes and soufganiot (jelly donuts) as well as other tasty treats at the Festival Café.

Tue, Dec 11, 7pm, $35
ALL HOLIDAYS / LA DOLCE VITA: ITALIAN DESSERT TASTING with FRANCINE SEGAN
Tired of soufganiot (Hanukkah's popular jelly donut treats)? Celebrate the last night of the Festival of Lights by satisfying your sweet tooth with anecdotes (and nibbles!) of sublime Italian desserts like gelato, rum baba, and more. You'll even get a chance to be creative as culinary historian FRANCINE SEGAN demonstrates techniques for sculpting marzipan.

Mon, Dec 24, 8:00pm, $65.00 Orchestra / $45.00 Rear Orchestra
A JEWISH CHRISTMAS EVE / DAVID BROZA'S NOT-EXACTLY-CHRISTMAS-EVE CONCERT
The New York Post has said that "[t]o hear David Broza's music is to be moved. To see Broza in concert is to be mesmerized." Jews (and anyone else!) looking for an alternative to the Chinese-and-a-movie New York tradition can go East — Upper East, to be precise — to the 92nd Street Y, where Israeli rock superstar DAVID BROZA performs his annual "Not-Exactly-Christmas-Eve Concert." With 16 gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums, the singer-guitarist (and UNICEF ambassador) has fans all over the world.

Sun, Dec 30, 2007, 7:00pm, $35 (includes post-concert reception)

Post-concert vodka tasting!

Kick off your New Year's celebration with trumpeter VALERY PONOMAREV and his 16-piece V.P. JAZZ BIB BAND in an evening of classic American jazz. Known for his original trumpet style, Ponomarev played in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers before embarking on his own successful career. He is also an accomplished writer and composer. After the concert, enjoy a reception that includes a vodka tasting!

Mon, Dec 31, 2007, 8:00pm, $75/$55 (includes champagne toast during intermission)

The program includes guitar arrangements of works by Rossini, Bach, and Rimsky-Korsakov, as well as a tribute to Brazilian composers such as Villa-Lobos and Bellinati. Celebrate the imminent arrival of 2008 with a champagne toast during intermission.

ABOUT HANUKKAH — THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, commemorates the Maccabees' victory over the Syrians (around 165 BCE). The Jews, under the Syrian King Antiochus, had been suffering religious persecution. So the Maccabees organized a revolt that ultimately led to the reclamation and rededication of the Jewish Temple, which the Syrians had desecrated (the word Hanukkah means dedication). According to the legend of Hanukkah, only one jar of oil was left uncontaminated, and although it only contained enough oil to burn for one day, miraculously, the oil lasted eight days — long enough to make more oil for the Temple's menorah. This explains the eight days of Hanukkah and the connection to light and candles (the modern-day version of the ancient oil lamp). The miraculous oil in the story is commemorated with delicious holiday foods like potato latkes (pancakes) and sufganiot (jelly doughnuts). This year, the first candle of Hanukkah is lit on the evening of Tuesday, December 4; the last day of Hanukkah is Wednesday, December 12.
