Hyman, one of jazz's senior statesmen, has been performing and presenting jazz for more than two decades at the 92nd Street Y. He founded the Y's annual Jazz in July festival and ran it for 20 years until 2005, when he handed over the reigns to the current artistic director, Bill Charlap. His winter/spring series, Jazz Piano at the Y, has been running since 1984.

| ABOUT DICK HYMAN |
 |
Jazz master Dick Hyman — pianist, organist, improviser, composer, arranger and conductor — turned 80 on March 8. More than 150 albums have been recorded under his own name, including his precedent-setting 1969 recording of compositions for Moog synthesizer, The Electric Eclectics, which was the first recording of popular music for the instrument. In the 1960's, he served as music director for Arthur Godfrey's radio and television programs and twenty-some years later for In Performance at the White House and Benny Goodman's final television appearance on Benny: Let's Dance!

Over the course of his career, he has performed and recorded with a veritable Who's Who of jazz greats including Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Red Norvo, Benny Goodman and Ruby Braff and pianists George Shearing, Derek Smith, Marian McPartland, Roger Kellaway, Ralph Sutton and Dick Wellstood. In the pop world, Mr. Hyman has been heard on the recordings of Andre Kostelanetz, Percy Faith, Tony Bennett and Perry Como. More recently, Beck and Busta Rhymes have used samples of his original recordings on their recordings. Also a highly respected composer and arranger, Mr. Hyman has written scores for Count Basie, the Mills Brothers, The Boston Pops, Jessye Norman, Marilyn Horne and Robert White, Doc Severinsen and others. His original works include Piano Concerto and Ragtime Fantasy as well as chamber works like Sonata for Violin and Piano and Sextet for Clarinet, Piano and Strings. Mr. Hyman has made substantial contributions to the entertainment world in film, stage, television and radio productions. He served as composer, arranger and/or conductor for many films, most notably Woody Allen's Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose, Stardust Memories, Hannah and Her Sisters, Radio Days, Bullets Over Broadway, Mighty Aphrodite, Everyone Says I Love You and Sweet and Lowdown. In addition to his skills as a performing musician, Mr. Hyman is widely recognized as an eager historian of jazz piano and an avid preservationist of this quintessential American art form.

| ABOUT THE 92nd STREET Y |
 |
Since its concert series began in 1934, what is now the 92nd Street Y Tisch Center for the Arts, endowed through the generous support of Joan and Preston Robert Tisch, has presented acclaimed classical musicians like Janos Starker, Emmanuel Pahud and the Tokyo String Quartet. The Center is also well known for its two jazz series — Jazz Piano at the Y curated by jazz great Dick Hyman and Jazz in July, curated by Bill Charlap — as well as its Lyrics & Lyricists series, the grandfather of the now popular American Songbook series. The Center's legendary Unterberg Poetry Center (estab. 1939) presents the country's oldest and most illustrious reading series and an extensive writing program that gives working adults the opportunity to learn from well-known, published authors. Outreach activities include a literacy program for new immigrants and workshops for high school students taught by some of the country's leading writers.
