| Director, 92nd Street Y May Center for Health, Fitness & Sport |
An expert in health and physical education, Dave Schmeltzer has directed the 92nd Street Y's May Center for Health, Fitness & Sport since 1986, previously serving as assistant director beginning in 1976. Mr. Schmeltzer develops and oversees over 100 weekly fitness classes for virtually every age, interest and skill level; specialty fitness programs for children, teens, women, new exercisers, baby boomers, and seniors—populations traditionally underserved by health clubs; personal training; aquatics; and team sports. He also directs a comprehensive wellness program, developing lectures, symposia and workshops on, among other topics, nutrition, menopause, children's health, the mind/body connection, women's health, and the prevention of osteoporosis, arthritis, and coronary problems. He also directs the Y's Cardiac Rehab Program, a Phase III program supervised by cardiologists Nieca Goldberg of Lenox Hill Hospital and Richard Stein of Brooklyn Hospital. Mr. Schmeltzer oversees an 80,000-square-foot facility that houses a 5,000-square-foot cardiovascular training area, a full-service day spa, two weight-training rooms, two gyms, three racquetball courts, an indoor track, and a 25-yard, ozone-disinfected pool. A recent renovation yielded elegant new locker rooms, a dedicated locker room for teenage girls, a family changing area that offers parents a private place to bring their young children, a redesigned and upgraded reception area, a pro shop, and a cafe. Before coming to the Y, Mr. Schmeltzer was director of the Central Queens YM-YWHA. He holds a B.S. in health and physical education and an M.S. in health education from The City College of New York, and lives in Rockland County with his family. |
