| For more than 130 years, the 92nd Street Y has been a flagship organization on the national and local levels in the fields of Jewish community center work, Jewish philanthropy, cultural programming and social service, to name just a few areas of prominence, and the Y has been an innovator in a wide range of programs that serve both the general and Jewish communities in which it operates. Past research in the Y Archives has contributed to publications and exhibits on the history of modern dance in America, the participation of Jewish athletes in amateur and professional sports, women's studies, and immigration history, among other topics. The Archives is also a rich source of information about the thousands of performers who have appeared on the Y's stages, serving as the repository for paper records, photographs and audio and video recordings of thousands of events. In addition to its value for academic and historical research the Archives also contains documentation useful to genealogists, including membership records and participant files from many Y programs.
