DiFranco's latest album, Canon, and her first book of poetry and illustration, Verses, were both released in September. DiFranco handpicked the songs for Canon, her first studio retrospective, during a break from touring after the birth of her first child in January. The two-disc set includes songs from 1990 to 2006, plus five tracks that she re-recorded with long-time collaborator Todd Sickafoose, among others, including singer/songwriter Joseph Arthur and Afghan Whig/Twilight Singers frontman Greg Dulli.
Like all her recordings, Canon was released on DiFranco's Righteous Babe label, now headquartered in a newly renovated landmark building in her hometown of Buffalo, NY. The building, now known as Babeville, also houses a state-of-the-art performance space and contemporary arts center.
Verses, released by Seven Stories Press, features DiFranco's poetry and 12 of her paintings. Like her lyrics, the poems address intimacy, politics, compromise and love.
Ani DiFranco burst onto the scene in 1990. Her lyrics tackled political and sexual issues with insight and compassion, backed by percussive guitar finger picking and an inimitable vocal style. She is an eight-time Grammy Award nominee and her nearly two-dozen recordings have sold over 4.5 million copies, all on her own label.
