| Director, 92nd Street Y Camp Program |
As director of the 92nd Street Y Camp Program, Alan Saltz runs 12 day camps that serve 1,500 children, ages 3 to 15, every year. Since taking the helm in 1990, he has doubled the number of camps, with the new programs designed to reflect New York City campers' wide array of interests and abilities. To make the camp experience both challenging and rewarding for all the young people, Mr. Saltz added specialty arts and nature camps and teen programs to the Y's successful group of "traditional" programs and highly regarded programs for developmentally disabled children. Under his energetic leadership, enrollment has increased steadily, with camps filling up earlier each year-- primarily through word of mouth. It is a tribute to Mr. Saltz that the New York Sun recently dubbed the 92nd Street Y "the big daddy of all New York day camps" and that, in 1998, the Y's became the first day-camp program to be asked to join the selective Association of Jewish Sponsored Camps.
A 40-year veteran of camp programs, Mr. Saltz is often called upon to advise parents and other caregivers about choosing camps for their children. Besides making the process more manageable for adults, his guidance helps children make the most of their time at camp. Mr. Saltz's own camp experience dates back to kindergarten, when he attended his first camp, the YMHA in Inwood (Upper Manhattan). After 10 memorable years as a camper, he trained as a counselor and, realizing that he had found his true calling, spent five rewarding years on staff.
Mr. Saltz has dedicated his career to improving the lives of children and families. He began his career in 1982 at the Children's Aid Society, where he helped develop and then ran the family mediation program. He subsequently administered a shelter for the homeless at the Henry Street Settlement, which serves more than 100,000 New Yorkers each year. Since 1989 Mr. Saltz has held many teaching positions, including one at the Columbia University School of Social Work. He is a sought-after consultant, frequently sharing his expertise with social service agencies and schools throughout New York City.
Mr. Saltz holds a B.A. in Sociology from Lehman College and an M.S.W. from Hunter College. The father of two, Mr. Saltz lives in Forest Hills with his family.
