Connection on the E Train

I push through the masses clustered
like shipping packages, unknown
faces, mumbled features, my thoughts
stream—dinner, errands, conversations...

I see her: pink backpack
in full bloom, china-doll cheeks, coal
eyes, lips grayed with sadness. Her tears
framed, hedged-in by possum-turned bodies
and vested eyes—New York Post, BlackBerrys, crumpled

magazines. I work through entangled bodies
and, crouched at her feet, curiosity
ripples. Her voice tear-knotted, begins to slowly
unravel—thirteen, bullied, desperate, alone.
Our shared stories blossom into smiles and laughter.

Our lives hemmed in, then parted at 53rd and Lexington.

Lesley Thompson is originally from Houston, Texas. She came to New York City in 1989 to attend New York University, where she received her B.A. in English. She has a wonderful husband, Marc, and is a full-time mom to two boys: Joshua and David. Ms. Thompson has recently started back down the writing path, and is eager to see what the future holds.
