| Beginning in September, the American Jewish community marks 350 years of Jewish communal life in the United States with "Celebrate 350: Jewish Life in America, 1654-2004," a series of events taking place around the country. The anniversary commemorates Jews' contributions to American life beginning in 1654, when Jewish refugees from Brazil settled in New York, forming the first North American Jewish community. As part of the nationwide celebration, the 92nd Street Y—one of the oldest Jewish institutions in the United States—presents more than 30 programs between September 2004 and May 2005. The Y's yearlong commemoration includes concerts and lectures featuring leading artists, critics, thinkers, authors, religious leaders and musicians. Many of these programs will be shared with communities across North America through the Y's satellite-broadcast program, Live from NY's 92nd Street Y™. |
