Unterberg Poetry Center Writing Program

Since 1939, the Unterberg Poetry Center's Writing Program has offered students of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to hone their skills as writers and deepen their appreciation as readers, with programs ranging from introductory classes to literary seminars to advanced writing workshops.

Introductory classes show readers the way into writing. Advanced workshops offer MFA-caliber instruction without requiring a full-time commitment. Master classes give our students the opportunity to work with selected writers who are visiting New York to read at the Poetry Center.

For introductory writing workshops and literary seminars, enrollment is open.

For advanced writing workshops in poetry, fiction and nonfiction, as well as for master classes, registration is by permission only. Students are chosen by the instructors on the basis of a manuscript submission. Click here for guidelines.

The Poetry Center will host an Open House on Wednesday, January 11, from 7-8 pm, to give students an opportunity to talk with workshop instructors before applying for advanced writing courses. Please note that some instructors’ schedules may prevent them from attending. Contact the Poetry Center to confirm attendance by a particular instructor.

A limited amount of scholarship assistance is available for Poetry Center classes. For information or to request a scholarship application, call Scholarship Services at 212.415.5699. Applications are also available at Customer Service in the main lobby of 92nd Street Y. Please note that scholarship applications must be received by the manuscript deadline for classes that require manuscript submission. Late applications will not be accepted. Scholarship applications should be sent to the address on the form.

Students will have the opportunity to be published in the Unterberg Poetry Center’s new online literary magazine, Podium: www.92Y.org/podium

If you have questions about manuscript submission or any other aspect of the Writing Program, please contact the Poetry Center at 212.415.5760 or email.
