Music Director of the 92Y Community Orchestra
Sean ( Shoichi ) Kubota was recently awarded the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's First International Sir Georg Solti Conducting Competition and currently serves as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's conducting fellow under the direction of Music Director Riccardo Muti. Mr. Kubota has been the Music Director of the Orchestrada Tokyo since 2011, the 92Y Orchestra since 2010 and the Orchestra INSONICA since 2008. He has appeared as a conductor with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Civic Symphony, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, the Orchestra of Sofia and the Orchestra della Toscana. His conducting teachers include Hugh Wolff, Marin Alsop, Leonard Slatkin, David Zinman and Kurt Masur.
During the summers of 2004 to 2007, Mr. Kubota was invited to the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Italy. There he worked with Gianluigi Gelmetti and received the Emma Contestable Fellowship. In 2008, he made several appearances as a fellow conductor at the American Academy of Conducting at the Aspen Music Festival.
A native of Tokyo, Japan, Mr. Kubota received his Masters of Music in orchestral conducting in 2005 from The Juilliard School. He also holds a Professional Study Diploma from Mannes College of Music, and is a 2008-2009 season recipient of the Japanese Government Artist Fund.
92Y School of Music Orchestra
The Orchestra has been part of the 92Y School of Music’s history from its inception in 1917. Originally created to provide talented amateurs and professional musicians with the opportunity to read, rehearse and perform great works of the symphonic literature. The Orchestra is excited to present this concert in Kaufman Hall for the first time since 1986.
