Recanati-Kaplan - School of the Arts Gifted and Talented Program

Merit Scholarship For Excellence in Art, Music and Dance (Ages 7-17)

David Alvarez, Tony Award® winner for Billy Elliot, started his musical studies at 92Y as a beginner pianist in fall 2006. He showed such potential that he was awarded a full-tuition Recanati-Kaplan scholarship to study piano privately through 2012. David also became involved with dance and went on to perform in Billy Elliot the Musical on Broadway.

Benjamin P. Wenzelberg has been an R-K Scholar since 2008. His recent accomplishments include: composing an opera, “The Sleeping Beauty,” which won a 2014 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award & Charlotte V. Bergen Scholarship Prize. His piano trio, “Midnight Tides,” won the 2014 BMI Student Composer Award and Carlos Surinach Prize.

Ten-year-old Oona Laurence, Recanati-Kaplan scholar in dance, made her Broadway debut as Roald Dahl’s Matilda in Matilda the Musical. Of being on Broadway, Oona says, “It’s like you are getting your story out to a bigger audience in a more professional way.” Does she get nervous? “Sometimes, but mostly an excited nervous that feels like butterflies.”

Audrey Zhang has been drawing continuously almost every day since she was two years old. She prefers using black ink pen to draw images from her mind, and almost every picture of hers is different. The winner of many art competitions, she was most recently named national champion for Google 4 Doodle in 2014.

The application process for Music, Art and Dance has recently concluded. We would like to say thank you and good luck to everyone who submitted an application this year. For more information on next years Recanati-Kaplan scholarship, please call 212.415.5553.
