Like the Waves

Marilynn Talal

The nuthatch's call
goes up like fingers
deep within greening leaves.
Branches into joy.

When I look out
where sun has bleached
the water almost white,
sails open in full song.

Under smooth running bowsprit
waves part and return
like our hands. Our bodies.
Minutes ago. Without spaces.
