Pool Rules

At the May Center swimming pool, strict adherence to the following rules and etiquette is required for your safety and enjoyment. Individuals who do not obey pool rules will be asked to leave the facility and could face further disciplinary actions.

  • All patrons must follow the Standards of Acceptable Behavior at all times while on the pool deck, in the whirl pool or in the pool.
  • All patrons must follow the directive of the lifeguard on duty to ensure a safe environment for all.
  • All swimmers must shower before entering the pool and/or whirl pool(s).
  • Swim caps are required and are to be worn by all swimmers.
  • During “Lap Swim” all swimmers must circle swim.
  • The lifeguard in his/her sole discretion will determine the appropriate lane for all swimmers.
  • Street shoes are not permitted on the pool deck.
  • Stationary swimming is permitted during Adult Lap Swim at the lifeguard’s discretion.
  • Foul and abusive language is not permitted.
  • Proper swimming attire must be worn, cut-off shorts are not permitted.
  • Standing is not permitted at any time in the designated lap swim lanes.
  • Running is prohibited in the pool area.
  • Glass is not permitted on the pool deck.
  • Food and drink are not permitted in the pool area.
  • When the whistle is blown, stop swimming, look for the lifeguard and listen for instructions.
  • Urinating, discharge, expectorating or blowing the nose are not permitted in the pool.
  • Those with open sores will not be permitted in the pool or whirl pool and must obtain medical clearance prior to utilizing the pool or whirl pool.
  • Cell phone/IPAD/Tablet usage is not permitted in the pool or the whirl pool(s).
  • Flotation devices not provided by the 92Y are not permitted in the pool. This includes, but is not limited to water wings, “float suits,” rafts or rings.
  • Kickboards and pull buoys may be used for lap swimming only.
  • Fins, masks and snorkels are not permitted. All other training equipment is at the discretion of the lifeguard.
  • Backstroke and butterfly are at the discretion of the lifeguard.
  • Jumping and diving are only permitted with supervision of the swim instructor.
  • Any contact (including tapping the feet) between swimmers will not be tolerated. Please pass at the wall.
  • Splashing and/or rough housing is not permitted.
  • All swimmers under age 18 must be able to swim at least 1 unassisted length of the pool or be accompanied in the water by an adult.
  • Use of the pool and whirl pools without a lifeguard present on deck is strictly prohibited.
  • In the event of an alarm necessitating the evacuation of the pool, please exist the pool and listen for the directive of the lifeguard and/or Aquatic staff.
  • Family Swim is designated on Saturday and Sunday from 1-3 pm, kindly exit the pool in a timely fashion.
  • Prolonged or repetitive breath-holding can be deadly. No intentional hyperventilation or underwater competitive breath-holding.
