The Schools Partnership Program allows 92Y to "adopt" public elementary schools that have virtually no arts programs and provide direct arts services tailored to the needs and artistic goals for the school.
The program, which is closely aligned with the NYC Blueprint for the Arts in all disciplines, currently provides over 1,700 students at four schools in Upper Manhattan with at least 21 weeks of customized ceramics, dance, music, theatre, chorus, recorder and guitar instruction each year. 92Y teaching artists work with classroom teachers and school arts specialists to link the arts to other areas of academic instruction and academic standards, helping students build skills through the arts that are transferable to other areas of their lives (e.g., problem solving, analytical thinking, concentration, listening).
The program runs from October through May, with teaching artist visits occurring two times per week. Students learn the fundamentals of their respective disciplines through the use of proper technique, vocabulary, writing, improvisation and performance, supported by original curriculum materials provided to teachers and students. After-school scholarships are offered to select students in dance, music and visual arts. Free music and dance performances, art exhibitions and workshops for students and their families are held at 92Y.
