The After-School Scholarship Program enables over 50 talented children per year with limited financial means to take after-school courses at 92nd Street Y in any School of the Arts discipline.
These programs strive to present high quality learning experiences in the arts for children, while building strong on-going partnerships with public schools and children's families. Here's how the program works:
Offerings
- Teachers and teaching artists who participate in 92Y's Educational Outreach Programs (Schools Partnership and Musical Introductions) are asked to nominate students from their classes for an after-school scholarship.
- Scholarships are awarded in dance, music or visual art on the basis of potential talent, students' interest, parents' commitment to facilitating children's participation and financial need.
- Parents and their children are invited to observe open classes and take a tour of 92nd Street Y.
- Parents and students are invited to concerts, performances and museum visits, in an effort to make learning through the arts a family venture.
One of the main goals of 92Y's After-School Scholarship Program is to widen the pool of students who begin studying an art form. Since school cutbacks have led to a drastic drop in the number of children beginning to play an instrument, learning dance or learning how to draw, 92Y is attempting to increase the number of entry points for our public school students.
Another commitment on the part of 92Y's School of the Arts is to identify exceptional talent. Several students who began classes as part of the Afterschool Scholarship Program have gone on to be awarded other scholarships that allow them to continue at the school and take advanced classes. Some of the most popular offerings are tap dance, beginning ballet, jazz hip-hop, violin, piano, painting, drawing, jewelry-making and ceramics. This is a wonderful opportunity for public school students who need and desire this type of concentrated study in the arts, and for whom it would not be possible without these scholarships.
