Beginning singers learn the fundamentals of classical voice production by practicing a selection from the classical vocal repertoire.
This class gives an overview of the basics of vocal technique, breath support, interpretation and diction.

Fundamentals of the singing technique (voice production and breath support). Group and individual practice of breathing and vocal exercises.
Overview of the Classical Vocal Literature. Composers, styles and languages.
Discussion and musical analysis of each student’s chosen repertoire. Work on musical interpretation.
Introduction to lyric diction and overview of the International Phonetic Alphabet.
Discussion on performance skills and practice. Students have a chance to practice their skills by performing in class and work on their repertoire in a masterclass setting.

Classical Singing for Beginners

Versatile soprano Anya Fidelia made her professional debut at the Caramoor International Festival in New York, where she returned in subsequent seasons, and is now enjoying a thriving performing and teaching career.
A winner of numerous grants and award, most recently Anya was heard on the PBS Television Special Tour "Romantic Journey," including a special NYC performance at the legendary Beacon Theater on Broadway.
Ms. Fidelia’s recent domestic and international operatic seasons include the roles of Butterfly, Tosca, Santuzza as well as most Verismo and Verdi heroines amongst other dramatic spinto soprano repertory roles. The highlights include Metropolitan Opera Guild, Carnegie Hall, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, New Israeli Opera, Centro de Bellas Artes in Puerto-Rico, International House of Music in Moscow, Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and more. Who is eligible for priority registration?
Individuals who have participated in 92nd Street Y programs over the past year in selected program areas, participants in certain memberships, and those who have made contributions of $500 or more to 92Y, are eligible to register for programs before they become available to the general public.
How do I know if I qualify?
Patrons that qualify for Priority Registration will receive packets in the mail explaining how to purchase online. Priority registration is normally mailed 2-3 weeks before a catalog is available. Registration information includes your Patron ID#. You can use this ID# to setup your login information online. This will allow you to register early for a course or event. Please note: if you receive a packet, you are only eligible to priority register for the programs covered in your packet.
