"Structure and elegance in a tornado of noise, and beauty that cuts through the maelstrom like a ray of light." —The Chicago Tribune
The genre-defiant quartet Little Women create music whose aim is transcendence, be it via brutally precise sonic assault, indelibly ascendant melodies or a quiet imbued with the globally resonant sound of the circulatory system. Saxophonists Travis Laplante and Darius Jones breathe together as one multi-tongued exquisite beast, reveling in higher harmonics, splitting overtones to create ghost notes. Together with guitarist Andrew Smiley and drummer Jason Nazary, they create intricate yet whiplash-bestowing riffs which morph on a dime into ever-exploratory sub-groupings.
Lung is the group’s epic new composition, collectively composed and refined over the course of 2011/12. It will be released by AUM Fidelity as Spring 2013 arises. Tone poem evocation, pop group melodicism, all-four-vocal-chords-as-one intonation and unparalleled shrapnel-sharp/laser-beam-focused shredding are some of the sonic vistas moved through during this astonishing and unprecedented new creation. While the visceral quality of their previous work is fully maintained, the band is now also comfortable in places of deep mystery & subtlety—the long inhale, and magical moment of pause before the exhale—thereby allowing a deeper dive into the inner planes of emotion and spirit. The release of Lung will be celebrated tonight with a fully-to-the-present-moment performance of this long-form composition.
Tonight’s performance is a double-bill with underground guitar savant Mick Barr, who also inked the cover art for Lung and each of Little Women’s two previous releases.
