Host Josh Jackson takes his broadcast music magazine The Checkout from WBGO’s airwaves to 92YTribeca’s Mainstage each month, giving audiences a chance to see the most exciting jazz performers on the scene today and discover the innovative musicians who are shaping its future.
Tim Green Quintet
Saxophonist, composer and arranger, Tim Green, is a rising star on the international music scene. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Tim was inspired to pursue music by a family of musicians at the age of 10. After attending the Baltimore School for the Arts and the Manhattan School of Music, he was invited to be a part of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass summer program, where he studied with Christian McBride, Lewis Nash, Benny Green, Wallace Roney and Russell Malone.
Later, while attending the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California, Green studied, performed and toured nationally and internationally with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard. Since then, Green has performed with a host of artists from the worlds of jazz, hip hop and gospel, including Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Jon Faddis, Patrice Rushen, Queen Latifah, Mo’ Horns, Israel Houghton, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin and Wynton Marsalis.
In August of 2005, Green released his debut album entitled Divine Inspiration on G Major Records, which features hymns and spiritual songs. He has performed on the nationally televised Stella Gospel Music Awards, BET’s hit gospel competition show “Sunday Best “ and has been working with his own band on original music exploring the jazz and gospel sound. Recent performances include places such as Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the Mercy Soul Quintet.
Committed to giving back to younger musicians and to his community, Green currently serves as the saxophone professor at Morgan State University and also teaches at his former high school.
Orrin Evans Trio
Orrin Evans has been recognized as one of the most distinctive and inventive pianist of his generation. In a short span of time Orrin has earned the titles of pianist, composer, bandleader, teacher, producer and arranger and most recently, a recipient of a 2010 Pew Fellowship in the Arts. The New York Times describes him as "...a poised artist with an impressive template of ideas at his command," a quality that has undoubtedly assisted in keeping Orrin at the forefront of the music scene.
Growing up in a musical city like Philadelphia was extremely important to early development of Orrin’s career. Philadelphia afforded Orrin the opportunity to study informally with the likes of Trudy Pitts, Shirley Scott, Mickey Roker, Bobby Durham, Edgar Bateman, Sid Simmons, and formally with William Whitaker, Jack Carr and Charles Pettaway. Later, while attending Mason Gross School of The Arts at Rutgers University, some of his teachers included Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen, Ralph Bowen and Ted Dunbar. They instilled in him the importance of the fundamentals of jazz as well as the necessity of listening to and living the music. After moving to New York in August of 1996 Orrin was invited to join Bobby Watson’s band “Horizon” on their European tour. This opportunity introduced Orrin to the New York jazz scene. His recording and performing resume includes Wallace Roney, Mos Def, Common, Pharoah Sanders, Antonio Hart, Carmen Lundy, Ralph Peterson, Ralph Bowen, The Mingus Big Band, Roy Hargrove, Nicolas Payton, Brandford Marsalis, Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson, Sean Jones, Tim Warfield, Ravi Coltrane, Robin Eubanks, Duane Eubanks and Dave Douglas.
Orrin’s recording career started in 1994 with a self-produced trio release called The Trio featuring Matthew Parrish on bass and Byron Landham on drums. The release can now be found on the Imani Record label under the title Déjà Vu. After signing with PosiTone Records, Orrin released his highly acclaimed recording, Faith In Action. His composition, “Don’t Call Me Wally” has been nominated for a Grammy for Best Improvised Jazz Solo and the brand new sophomore project from his band Tarbaby, co-lead band with drummer Nasheet Waits and bassist Eric Revis, The End of Fear (PosiTone Records) is already generating a buzz.
