Screening and discussion to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Jane Austen’s novel.
"The casting here is more perfect than in any Pride & Prejudice adaptation I’ve seen and (Joe) Wright is fearless in his handling of the characters." – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon
In 1813, a young English woman wrote a novel called First Impressions. Two hundred years and one change in title later, that book, known to us as Pride and Prejudice, remains one of the best loved and most enduring works of literature in the Western canon. It's been read and re-read, studied and re-studied, and been adapted dozens of times in to movies, miniseries and zombie fan fiction. What is it about this book that continues to capture our hearts, decade after decade? Is it witty Lizzie Bennet, with her arch observations of the world? Is it brooding Mr. Darcy and his failed struggle to overcome his attraction to her? Join romantic comedy scholar Chloe Angyal (Editor at Feministing.com), pop culture writer and Austen fashion show model Sarah Seltzer, author Sayantani DasGupta (who is working on an Indian adaptation of the novel) and others for a screening of the 2005 film directed by Joe Wright and starring Kiera Knightly, followed by a panel discussion of this very old but thoroughly modern story.
