Thomas Hart Benton was the major and most popular American Scene painter during the 1930s.
He viewed the country and its people as inheritors of the work ethic of the early settlers and pioneers. His people were the hard working farmers and factory workers who were, for him, the backbone of America. And he celebrated them, their lives, their activities and their music in an unprecedented series of murals from the 1930s through the 1970s. Although scorned by the avant garde, his art provides insights into the many ways the American character has been defined then and now.
Ticket & Reception from $32.
