From Night of the Demons director Kevin Tenney, comes this cautionary tale about meddling with evil spirits found within... the Ouija board.
When feather-haired yuppie Brandon brings the board to a party, his ex Linda (Whitesnake muse Tawny Kitaen) finds herself enticed by its pull of the unknown. Her hard-drinking construction worker BF thinks it’s a joke—until she’s possessed by the spirit of an axe-wielding mass murderer. For a horror film based on a product put out by Parker Brothers, the film manages to build an incredible amount of slow-burn tension and legit jolts, with crafty DePalma-esque overhead flourishes and an oddly touching Sirkian bromance between the two leads. Perhaps doing more than anyone else to drag Witchboard out of the dollar-bin and into the film canon, Carol J. Clover devoted an entire chapter to it in her film-theory classic Men Women and Chainsaws, arguing for the complexity of its gender politics.
