The Persuasions, one of the world's greatest a cappella groups, were first produced by Frank Zappa in the '60s and have since released more than 18 albums, including whole records devoted to music of Zappa, the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and U2, recording and performing alongside the likes of Stevie Wonder and Lou Reed along the way.

The Persuasions perform a very special set here in front of the NYC premiere of the film What Is a Heart?, in which they're featured.

What is a Heart?, directed by Ted Bogosian, is a 37-minute film exploration of Christopher Janney's world-renowned artwork HEARTBEAT that features performances by acclaimed New York dancer and choreographer Emily Coates, as well as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Sara Rudner, with music by The Persuasions.

Christopher Janney is a composer, architect and artist known for his work on the interrelation of architecture and music. Janney began developing the performance piece HEARTBEAT in 1981, while an Artist-in-Residence at MIT. For the project, Janney placed a wireless telemetry heart monitor on the performer's body which tracked the electrical impulses from the brain to the heart and its surrounding muscles and amplified the results. A new version of the work was created in 2008 with former New York City Ballet dancer Emily Coates and the "kings of a cappella," The Persuasions. The piece was first performed in 1983 with Sara Rudner, then principal dancer for Twyla Tharp Dance, and again in the late 90s, when Mikhail Baryshnikov performed it on a world tour.

8 pm doors, 9 pm show.
