An APAP showcase with two of the most celebrated and original purveyors of world music.

The Klezmatics

Since their emergence more than 25 years ago, The Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music, made aesthetically, politically and musically interesting recordings, inspired future generations, created a large body of work that is enduring and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Often called a “Jewish roots band,” The Klezmatics have led a popular revival of this ages-old, nearly forgotten art form. Not bad for a bunch of Americans who each came to klezmer music almost by accident. They have garnered a great variety awards and accolades throughout their career, including a 2006 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album and have topped the Billboard world music charts on numerous occasions.

Arturo O'Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) was founded by artistic director Arturo O'Farrill to perform compositions of masters such as Machito, Tito Puente, Chico O'Farrill, Astor Piazzola, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal and others, and to keep the culturally rich tradition of latin big band music alive by continuing to commission new works. In the spring of 2008, the Orchestra released its second album, Song for Chico (Zoho Music), which was met with worldwide acclaim and in February 2009 won a Grammy Award in the category of Best Latin Jazz Album. The ALJO's third album, 40 Acres and a Burro (Zoho Music), was nominated for a 2012 GRAMMY Award in the category of best Latin Jazz Album.
