“It's love on wheels!” Before Xanadu there was this freewheeling roller disco romp, starring Linda Blair as the rich girl in a leotard who takes love for a spin with a feather-haired bad boy from the wrong side of the roller rink.

Wheelin' into theaters toe-to-toe with Skatetown U.S.A, just as the fad was about to peak, Roller Boogie emerged as the favorite of the two cash-ins. Director Mark L. Lester tackles the material with the same full-tilt energy he'd bring to later works like Commando, paying loving homage to the AIP beach party musical, and with enough class to glitz things up—featuring dance numbers courtesy of Elvis's choreographer and bright scope lensing by John Carpenter's DP. Boogie may be the ultimate disco-era time capsule, with its wall-to-wall struttin' soundtrack (kicking off with the unbearably catchy Cher anthem “Hell on Wheels”) and enough satin bomber jackets and knee-high tube socks to inspire American Apparel for years to come.

Director: Mark L. Lester. 103 min. 1979. 35mm.

Ticket Price: $10, member price: $6.
