Still unavailable on DVD in the US, Jean-Luc Godard's King Lear is the product of its creator's abject refusal to make easy-to-stomach commercial art.
Godard's film, commissioned by producer Menahem Golan on a cocktail napkin contract, is a cacophonous, semi-serious film maudit that follows a distant relative of William Shakespeare's play after a nuclear blast wipes out most of humanity. Unfortunately, while Quentin Tarantino would have you believe that he was in the film, he was not. But gangster-cum-producers, Norman Mailer and Woody Allen in cameo roles, and stars Molly Ringwald, Peter Sellars (the other Peter Sellers!), Leos Carax and Godard himself are all in the film.
This rare screening of King Lear, one of Godard's more elusive films, will be co-hosted by Richard Brody (author of Everything is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard), Bilge Ebiri (New York Magazine film critic) and Simon Abrams (freelance film critic for the Village Voice, amongst other outlets).
Discussion will take place after the 7pm screening only.
