“PUBLIQuartet is a string quartet that performs classical, contemporary, and improvised musical works with skillful craftsmanship, while cutting through traditional boundaries. With dedication and a command that owns a broad stylistic palette, their warm, yet bold concert performances continue to open new doors, with imminent possiblilities that point to where their music will continue to flourish.” –Kunle Mwanga, producer
Formed in 2010, PUBLIQuartet injects fresh perspective into the world of Classical music. Graduates of The Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music and Mannes College of Music, each member contributes to a collective background in classical, jazz, world and electro acoustic performance. They aim to present music from the classical cannon, contemporary compositions and open-form improvisations which extend the stylistic norms of the traditional string quartet.
Members of the quartet have worked with members of the Muir, Juilliard, Orion, Mendelssohn, Tokyo and American String Quartets, as well as acclaimed composer Joan Tower. PQ supports their artistic community by presenting works by New York City’s emerging and established composers, as well as by providing educational workshops in string improvisation. Their new concert series, MIND|THE|GAP, explores ways to connect old and new music by bridging musical content through improvisation. This summer PQ will be in residence at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada.
