"We're not gonna fall for a banana in the tailpipe."
Streetwise Detroit detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) heads west in order to solve the murder of his best pal in the buddy cop comedy that launched a thousand imitators.
Setting his sights on a shady art dealer, Axel quickly finds himself on the outs with the by-the-book po-pos of 90210, having to outsmart the sweetly bumbling pair of officers assigned to keep an eye on him. Originally intended as a vehicle for Sylvester Stallone (who rewrote the script and subsequently brought it to life as dead-serious rogue cop flick Cobra), the film was retooled as a comedy with Eddie in mind, giving him his signature role. While this is clearly Murphy’s show, the film is packed with overachieving work by the bit players: Bronson Pinchot as Serge, the oddly accented gallery assistant; real-life angry police captain Gil Hill; and the always unnerving Jonathan Banks ("Breaking Bad") as a hired goon. “Famously scored by Harold Faltermeyer's playful, bouncy synths, the film conjures up, among other things, a sense of middle-income workers doing their jobs in the City of the Angels, as the rich indulge in their eccentric habits and highly illegal hobbies.” – Chris Cabin, Slant Magazine
Director: Martin Brest. 105 mins. 1985. 35mm.
