Out of the cave of Polyphemos

Naomi Blackwood
(Attic black-figure column krater. Attributed to the Sappho painter, ca. 510 BCE)

Under this belly
The journey began
Ten years
In the belly
Of the Sea-God
For his one-eyed son
For the pride-sin
Of the hero

He could not be no-man
This man
Unbridled in deceit
Wiley in ways
Unimaginable to men
And giants

His name meant everything
It was his home
The island a hunger
In his belly
Swelling
With every step
The ram took
Towards the sea
