Wall Street Journal writer and London native Aleksandra Crapanzano talks with New York magazine’s Adam Platt about London’s food history, the restaurant scene and how it became the new global epicenter of cuisine.

Once known for its watery potatoes, stringy mutton and grayed vegetables, innovators like Ruth Rogers, Heston Blumenthal and Yotam Ottolenghi have infused the city with new culinary energy. Crapanzano will share stories and recipes from her new book The London Cookbook: Recipes from the Restaurants, Cafes and Hole-in-the-Wall Gems of a Modern City, a highly curated collection of the city’s best recipes highlighting the city’s incredibly diverse cuisine.

Brief Bios

Aleksandra Crapanzano is the recipient of the James Beard Foundation M.F.K. Fisher Award for distinguished writing, and her work has appeared in several anthologies including Best Food Writing 2013. She writes the “A Little Something Sweet” dessert column for the Wall Street Journal and frequently writes their lengthy “Mega Meal” page. She has written about food for The New York Times Magazine, Gourmet, Food & Wine, Saveur and Travel & Leisure. Now in New York, Crapanzano spent much of her childhood living in London, and continues to visit many times a year.

Adam Platt has been a contributing editor and restaurant critic for New York magazine since 2000. He won the James Beard Foundation Journalism Award for Restaurant Reviews in 2010. During the course of nearly 25 years in the magazine business, Platt has written for a variety of publications, including The New Yorker (staff Talk of the Town writer), The New York Observer (columnist) and Esquire. He developed his eclectic palate growing up in places like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.

Adam is a graduate of the American School in Japan (High School), the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and the Columbia School of Journalism. He is the son of a retired American diplomat (and also the brother of a well-known American actor). He currently lives in Greenwich Village with his wife, Kate, and his two daughters, Penelope and Jane.

Who is eligible for priority registration?

Individuals who have participated in 92nd Street Y programs over the past year in selected program areas, participants in certain memberships, and those who have made contributions of $500 or more to 92Y, are eligible to register for programs before they become available to the general public.

How do I know if I qualify?

Patrons that qualify for Priority Registration will receive packets in the mail explaining how to purchase online. Priority registration is normally mailed 2-3 weeks before a catalog is available. Registration information includes your Patron ID#. You can use this ID# to setup your login information online. This will allow you to register early for a course or event. Please note: if you receive a packet, you are only eligible to priority register for the programs covered in your packet.
