Comedienne, actress and author Susie Essman ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") discusses her new Upper West Side-set comedy Putzel, living and working in New York City and her bigger-than-life persona with fellow award-winning actress Judy Gold.
Susie Essman has played the sassy Susie Greene for all eight seasons of the critically-acclaimed HBO comedy series, "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Her hilarious bouts of withering sarcasm and uninhibited insults have become her character’s trademark. The Los Angeles Times calls Susie, “The most lyrical purveyor of profanity on television. She makes the entire cast of “The Sopranos” look like rank amateurs. It really is a gift.” The New York Times called Susie “one of the most vivid characters in the show, whose off-color tantrums have become an audience favorite the way Kramer's clumsy entrances once were.” The New York Observer (which calls her “fantastic”) says “she's taken female cursing to longshoreman levels, pummeling her bumbling, barrel-bodied husband with potty-mouthed invectives like 'You fat fuck!'”
Susie’s streetwise vernacular is perfectly suited for her life in Manhattan where she has been a veteran of the world of stand up comedy for twenty-nine years. She has appeared in her own half-hour HBO comedy special, made numerous appearances on "Late Night with Conan O’Brien," "The View" and "Crank Yankers," to name just a few of her many television credits. She has also acted in numerous films, including costarring with John Travolta as the voice of Mittens the Cat in the Disney animated movie Bolt and the soon to be released Putzel in which she plays Gilda Himmelstein. Susie's book What Would Susie Say – Bullshit Wisdom Wisdom About Love, Life and Comedy is published by Simon & Schuster and is now available in paperback. Susie divides her time between New York City and upstate New York where she lives with her husband, four step-children and dog.

For some, life is an adventure filled with opportunities to excel and places to explore. For Walter Himmelstein, a young man, endearingly known as Putzel, life literally doesn’t go beyond his family’s fish store and his community on the upper west side of Manhattan. In this heartwarming comedy, Walter’s aspirations of taking over his uncle’s smoked fish emporium are disrupted by the arrival of Sally, who becomes romantically involved with his about-to-retire and very-married uncle. While Walter tries to thwart their romance in order to ensure his taking over the business, he finds his circumscribed life thrown off kilter, and, after years of being undermined by his family and friends, he finally starts to realize his full potential. With Sally’s help, Walter confronts his fears and proves he is more than a Putzel.
