One of the foremost pianists of our time, Sir András Schiff has chosen three young, accomplished pianists to present a new generation of great musicians in a new series in New York and Berlin. Be among the first to experience the next wave of brilliant players and their unique interpretations.

Born in Macau, Kuok-Wai Lio studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and has been working regularly with Sir András at the International Musicians Seminar Prussia Cove and other European festivals. He has given recitals in the US, Canada, Japan, Germany and Italy. In 2004 he performed for the President of China.

Sir András Schiff Selects: Young Pianists

One of the foremost pianists of our time, Sir András Schiff has created a series that presents three young accomplished pianists to audiences in New York and Berlin, representing a new generation of great musicians. The series begins tonight with Chinese pianist Kuog-Wai Lio and continues with:

 

Artist Bio

Born in Macau, Kuok-Wai Lio began his piano studies at the age of five. He was awarded a scholarship to study at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and he then attended the Curtis Institute of Music. His principal teachers have included Gabriel Kwok and Gary Graffman. Most recently, Mr. Lio has been working regularly with Sir András Schiff at international master classes and festivals in Europe.

Last season Mr. Lio replaced an indisposed Radu Lupu on the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts in New York to critical and popular acclaim. He has participated in Open Chamber Music Prussia Cove, the Marlboro Festival and Caramoor Rising Stars, as well as the Salzburg Festival and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Additionally he has given solo recitals at the Ravinia Festival and on the Vancouver Recital Series.

Mr. Lio has also performed with the Macau Orchestra, China and Hong Kong philharmonics, the Pan Asia, Russian, Grand Rapids and Kansas City symphonies, and Camerata Salzburg, and he has given recitals in Japan, Germany and Italy. Performances this season include a reengagement on the recital series of the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts as well as recitals with the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts in Fresno and Klavierfestival Ruhr. This year Mr. Lio is also performing with Marlboro on Tour.

Mr. Lio has received prizes in international competitions including the Fulbright, Gina Bachauer, Seiler, Steinway, Ettlingen and Chopin (Tokyo). In January 2004, he was awarded a Commendation of Merit given by the Chief Executive of Macau, and in 2013 he received an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Who is eligible for priority registration?

Individuals who have participated in 92nd Street Y programs over the past year in selected program areas, participants in certain memberships, and those who have made contributions of $500 or more to 92Y, are eligible to register for programs before they become available to the general public.

How do I know if I qualify?

Patrons that qualify for Priority Registration will receive packets in the mail explaining how to purchase online. Priority registration is normally mailed 2-3 weeks before a catalog is available. Registration information includes your Patron ID#. You can use this ID# to setup your login information online. This will allow you to register early for a course or event. Please note: if you receive a packet, you are only eligible to priority register for the programs covered in your packet.
