They’re bitter—and delicious! Jennifer McLagan, award-winning author of Bones, Fat and Odd Bits, shares the science, culture and history of this misunderstood flavor—plus some of the 120 deliciously idiosyncratic recipes from her new book, Bitter.

Brief Bios

Jennifer McLagan is a chef, food stylist and writer who has worked in Toronto, London and Paris as well as her native Australia. Two of her previous books, Bones (2005) and Fat (2007), each won Beard and IACP awards, with Fat being named the Beard Cookbook of the Year, and Odd Bits (2011) was nominated for both awards. Jennifer is a regular contributor to Fine Cooking and Food & Drink. She has lived in Toronto for more than thirty years with her sculptor husband, Haralds Gaikis, with whom she escapes to Paris as often as possible.

David Leite is the publisher of the two-time James Beard Award-winning website Leite’s Culinaria ( and is the writer of The David Blahg ( He’s also the author of The New Portuguese Table, which took home the IACP First Book/Julia Child Award. His writing has appeared in The New York Times (James Beard Award), Martha Stewart Living, Saveur, Bon Appétit, Gourmet, Food & Wine, Men’s Health, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Sun-Times and The Washington Post among others. He’s a correspondent for public radio's program "The Splendid Table" hosted by Lynne Rossetto Kasper. David has also appeared on History Channel 2′s "United Stuff of America," Food Network’s "Beat Bobby Flay," "The Today Show," "Radical Sabbatical" and is a regular guest on WTNH-TV. He's currently at work on a book titled Notes on a Banana: A Memoir of Food, Bipolar Disorder, and Love.

92Y YourStage provides a venue for independent curators, performers, and educators to mount a professional production. Yourstage events are confirmed once they meet a threshold for ticket sales by a certain date.

Who is eligible for priority registration?

Individuals who have participated in 92nd Street Y programs over the past year in selected program areas, participants in certain memberships, and those who have made contributions of $500 or more to 92Y, are eligible to register for programs before they become available to the general public.

How do I know if I qualify?

Patrons that qualify for Priority Registration will receive packets in the mail explaining how to purchase online. Priority registration is normally mailed 2-3 weeks before a catalog is available. Registration information includes your Patron ID#. You can use this ID# to setup your login information online. This will allow you to register early for a course or event. Please note: if you receive a packet, you are only eligible to priority register for the programs covered in your packet.
