"I know there are systems, but I continue to use my ear, my intuition, my sense of the weight of words. Yeats said that you know when a poem is finished when it makes a sound like the click of the lid of a music box. I guess I finally heard that click," writes Emily Fragos.
In this advanced workshop, students strengthen their writing style and voice by addressing lucidity, the musical line and poetic unpredictability and originality—the transformative and magical power of the art. They also delve into poetry from around the world as inspiration for writing assignments.
Manuscript submission required
Emily Fragos is the author of Hostage: New & Selected Poems and Little Savage. Her other honors include a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award. She is the 2015 Witter Bynner Fellow at the Library of Congress.
A student writes: "Emily Fragos creates a lively and intellectually rigorous poetry workshop without any trace of pretension. Her respect for language—and for the poets in the class—creates an immediate sense of community as she cuts right to the heart of the poems with integrity, humor and depth. I’ve taken many poetry workshops, through the MFA level, and find this one to be extremely refreshing and useful."
